7 Cool Instagram Stories Tips

Are you using Instagram Stories for your blog and biz yet? If no, you are missing out big time! Instagram Stories are a great way to connect with your audience. Instagram Stories are easy to use, and the Instagram Stories tips in this article will let you do some pretty cool things with your stories. Plus, Instagram stories are just fun!

Read on for some snazzy little Stories tips…

7 Cool Instagram Stories Tips

Instagram Stories tips and tricks! These cool Instagram Stories tips and tools will make your IG Stories so much more fun! This is perfect for bloggers! Click through to read the tips! #instagram, #instagramtips, #blogandbiz

Why you should be using Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories are a relatively new feature to Instagram, but they are already massively popular. CNN reports that:

“more than 400 million people use the popular feature each day, up from 250 million one year ago.”

Instagram Stories are super popular, and getting more so every day. And also–they're fun!

Your Instagram grid should be well planned out, with a nice aesthetic, and carefully chosen and edited photos. But Instagram Stories don't need to be like that. Your Instagram Stories can be:

  • unedited sneak peeks into your day
  • random monologues
  • screenshots of funny things from your phone
  • promos for your new product
  • announcements about a new blog post
  • the list goes on…

You can use Instagram stories for pretty much anything. Stories are a fantastic way to allow your audience to really get to know you better. And the more they know you, the more likely they are to like and trust you, which leads to blog post reads, email list sign-ups, and product purchases.

There's really no reason not to be using Instagram Stories.

So now for some Instagram Stories tips and tricks…

Create a solid background on Instagram Stories

This is one of my favorite Instagram Stories tips. Sometimes you want to just have text on a plain background for your story. Maybe you're explaining something, or promoting something. I used to do this by creating a solid color graphic in Canva, uploading that, then doing my text on top of it. But there's an easier way right in Instagram.

Select an image (any image will do), then select the drawing tool. Select whatever color you want your background to be, then press and hold the pen tool on the image for a few seconds. Voila, the whole image is now a solid color and you can type away.

Creating a solid background in Instagram stories

Use the eraser on Instagram Stories

Following up on that last trick, you can use the eraser to make some pretty cool effects. Select a photo that you want to use. Then use the pen tool to create a solid background like we just talked about. While you're still in the drawing setting, select the eraser tool (the fourth tool on top). You can then erase parts of the solid image.

Like this:

Use Unfold to create cool Instagram Stories

One of the top Instagram Stories tips I get asked about is how to find cool Instagram Stories templates. Well if you want some very cool looking templates, definitely check out the Unfold app. Unfold has dozens of great templates, some with just photos, some with just text, and some with both. Your photos can be arranged in a cool collage way, or you can have a photo with a title and a caption. Download the Unfold app and play around with it, you'll get some really cool results.

[click_to_tweet tweet=”Use these tips and tricks to make your Instagram Stories the coolest on the block.” quote=”Use these tips and tricks to make your Instagram Stories the coolest on the block.”]

Unfold is a great Instagram Stories App

Use Storeo to split up your Instagram Stories videos

As you probably know, videos uploaded to Instagram Stories can only be 15 seconds long. This can be a problem if you've recorded a 90-second video. But the Storeo app is the answer.

Just upload your video to Storeo, and it will automatically split it into 15 second chunks. Then just upload the chunks chronologically, one at a time, to your story. Voila, a long video, easily uploaded.

Split up your text boxes on Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories have five different text styles for you to choose from. This may seem kind of obvious, but try using more than one of them to create some snazzy looking text in your Instagram story. You can't use more than one style in one text box, but you can create multiple text boxes for whatever you're saying and then just arrange them to read smoothly.

Like so:

Using different fonts in Instagram Stories

Create custom colors for your Instagram Stories

The drawing and text tools in Instagram Stories only come in a few colors. But you can actually use any color in the rainbow. Just choose the color that's closest to what you want, and hold down on it for a few seconds. A whole new color palette will pop up and you can pick whatever color you want. This works for text, the background behind text, or the drawing tools.

Using custom colors in Instagram Stories

Create a drop shadow effect for your Instagram Stories

Create a drop shadow effect for the text in your story and I guarantee you'll have people DMing you asking how you did it. There's no actual drop shadow button in Instagram Stories, but you can create your own drop shadow effect easily.

Type your text in whatever color and font style you want. Then, type the exact same text in white. Then just put the color text on top of the white text, with a little bit of the white showing underneath (you can experiment until it looks just write. Voila, drop shadow effect.

The Beginner's Guide to ConvertKit

If you're wondering how to start an email list for your blog, I've got one word for you: ConvertKit. If you're not in the know, ConvertKit is an email system for bloggers. That last part is important. They advertise that the system was built by bloggers for bloggers. So you're probably like yeah, ok. But honestly, you can just tell from the product that it's true. It's so incredibly functional for my needs. It has every feature I want, and no crazy extra features. I'm pretty sure I use every feature available on there. Which isn't actually that many. Because it only has what you actually need, not 12 other bells and whistles that don't really help anything. Thumbs up for that. This is the beginner's guide to ConvertKit…it's not hard, but these tips will help!

Best WordPress Themes

Here are the actual reasons why ConvertKit has converted me.

The Beginner's Guide to ConvertKit

The Beginner's Guide to ConvertKit! Click to learn about all of the features that ConvertKit offers for bloggers. #blog, #blogging, #blogtips

*This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission. There is no extra cost to you for this.

1| ConvertKit allows you to tag subscribers.

ConvertKit allows you to tag each subscriber with one or more “tags.” So they can be “New subscribers,” “Interested in Pinterest,” “Social media lovers,” etc, etc. This is extremely useful in deciding who gets what email.

The “Interested in Pinterest” people should get every article you write on Pinterest, and your Pinterest course, and your Pinterest challenge. And your “New Subscribers” should get your welcome sequence. And so on.

You can tag people based on how they signed up for your list, based on what they've purchased from you, based on actions they've taken, or based on links you've clicked. You can put a link in an email and say “everyone who clicks this link to my Pinterest webinar will be tagged as ‘Interested in Pinterest.'” It's a fantastic tool.

ConvertKit's tagging system allows you to segment your list in a million different ways. Just think about what you can do with information like “this person was interested in a webinar about Instagram”…I sure bet they'll be interested in my new webinar about Instagram too! This kind of personalization is something that you don't get in a lot of other email providers.

Two | ConvertKit allows you to automate everything.

ConvertKit has great automation tools. You can tell it that whenever someone signs up to a particular form, they get tagged as “Interested in Pinterest.” Or, if they click a link to an article about Instagram, they're subscribed to your segment of emails on using Instagram for blog growth. It's all automatic, so you don't have to sit there putting people on different lists. You just set up these “rules” once, and the rest is all automated. It's awesome.

So, for example, everyone who signs up for my Blog Tools Guide that you'll see offered throughout this article will automatically get an email with a link to instantly download that Guide. Then, they'll automatically go through a series of a few welcome emails that I like to send all my subscribers. All without me doing a thing.

Three | ConvertKit has easy to use opt-in forms.

ConvertKit has nice, simple, and easy to use forms. You can use these as actual forms on your website. For example, I've got mine right in the footer of my site:

ConvertKit optin forms

And you also use them to integrate with services like Leadpages. You can send your Leadpage subscribers through a particular form, so the automation rules on that form will apply to those subscribers.

ConvertKit forms integrate with pretty much all of the major services like Leadpages, so you'll have no problem hooking things up.

Four | ConvertKit sequences make automated emails easy.

ConvertKit makes it very easy to set up “sequences,” meaning a series of emails that go to a particular set of subscribers. Just write your emails, tell it which subscribers it should go (for instance, all subscribers tagged “New subscriber”), and off it goes. It also gives you stats on your open rate, your click rate, and your unsubscribe rate, which is helpful to know.

This ties nicely into the Automations feature. I can set up a “rule” that everyone who signs up for a new download on my site gets sent into my “Welcome Sequence.” I set it up once, and then it goes on automatically every single time someone signs up.

Five | ConvertKit broadcasts make individual emails easy.

Of course, if you just want to send a one-off email, you can do that too. Just write the email and schedule it for whenever you want. No muss, no fuss. The good thing about ConvertKit emails is that they are very simple. They do not have the big drag and drop builder the way some services likes MailChimp and AWeber do. You may like those pretty emails, but the truth is, they are more likely to go to spam. It's better to send a nice clean email that looks like it's from a real person.

Of course, if you want to snazz up your ConvertKit emails, you can do it, you just need to now a little code. There are quite a few people out there who sell plug-and-play ConvertKit email templates, so if fancy email is your thing, you're still all set.

So, that, my friends, is why I have been converted to ConvertKit. I highly, highly recommend checking it out. Even if you don't have a big list yet, it's going to be so much easier in the future if you started out things like tagging now.

Two thumbs up on ConvertKit.

How to Use Pinterest Communities

You may have heard that Pinterest has a new feature. It's called Pinterest Communities, and it has the potential to be pretty cool. But what are Pinterest Communities, and how do you use Pinterest Communities? Let's dig in.

Learn how to use Pinterest Communities and what Pinterest Communities are! These Pinterest tips and blog tips will show you how to use Pinterest's newest feature! Love these tips! #blog, #blogger, #blogging, #blogtips, #pinterest, #pinteresttips, #socialmedia, #socialmediamarketing, #socialmediatips, #blogandbiz

What are Pinterest Communities?

Well, according to Pinterest:

“It’s a place to share tips, feedback, and ideas with people who share your interests—from baking to backpacking.”

Basically, it's like Pinterest's version of a Facebook group.

There are all types of Communities, and many are just getting started.

How do you get access to Pinterest Communities?

At the moment, you need an invite to get access to Pinterest Communities. But, I've got you covered.

Click right here to join my community, “Blog tips + tricks,” and you'll then have access to the whole Communities feature.

pinterest communities

How do you use Pinterest Communities?

Once you're a member of a Community, you have post anything–text, links, pins, and images.

Of course, you should read the Community rules before doing anything. Your new Community is probably based around a particular topic, so don't go posting recipes in a travel Community. Also pay attention to posting frequency rules, and what type of content should and should not be shared.

how to use pinterest communities

What's the difference between a Community and a Group Board?

Group boards are Pinterest boards with more than one collaborator. Pinterest originally intended group boards to be small. For instance, a wedding planner might make a group board with the bride to share ideas. But they morphed into HUGE boards, often with tens, or even hundreds of thousands of followers.

Pinterest seems to be stepping away from group boards, and Communities seem to be a part of that.

You shouldn't use your Community to just routinely post pin after pin the way many people do on group boards. Community content should be carefully curated. It's social. Group boards aren't.

So that's it! You now know how to use Pinterest Communities and what Pinterest Communities are!

Remember, you can join my Community on blogging right here.

Have you tried Communities yet? Let me know in the comments!
