How to Custom Edit Styled Stock Photos for Your Blog and Brand

*This post is a guest post from blogger Aminta Demadura.

Have you ever wondered exactly how you should be using styled stock photos on your blog and social media accounts?

In some situations, leaving the image as-is is the perfect use for it. But what about all the other graphics you need to run your business? For example, you’ll need custom social media headers, promotional images, pins, tweets, Instagram photos, blog post images, buttons, banners, website elements, and a bunch more.

That’s a lot of images! Not to mention it’s pretty freakin’ embarrassing when you find a dozen other people using the exact same free stock photos as you. (Hint: It’s not great from a branding perspective!).

But today you’re in luck, because in this post I’m going to show you nine killer ways to customize one styled stock photo and really make it your own.

How to Custom Edit Styled Stock Photos for Your Blog and Branding. This is a great guide for beginner bloggers on how to use custom styled stock photos! These are great blog tips! Click through to read all about how to use stock photos! #blog, #blogging, #blogtips, #stockphotos, #blogbiz, #branding, #socialmedia, #socialmediatips, #socialmediamarketing

Before we get started, let me show you the original photo we’ll be working with below:

 how to use stock photos

Change the Tone or Add A Filter to Spice Up Your Stock Photo

Picmonkey makes it super easy to add various filters and tones to your photos. Below you can see that I used a black and white tone, their Yester-year filter, and their HDR filter on our original image. The sky is really the limit here. Picmonkey offers dozens of different filters and effects, so play around a little bit and find out what works for your brand.

Add Interesting Effects to Change the Mood

Filters aside, there are also plenty of different effects you can use to change the mood of your photo. In this image, I used the bokeh filter to add a small and subtle, yet pretty bokeh to glam up the image. This is a really fun way to customize stock photos for things like Instagram (which is super visual) and blog posts, where you’re likely to display a large photo to draw in your readers.

Use A Gradient Overlay in Your Brand Colors

Gradient overlays have definitely become more popular in recent years, especially as bloggers use them to add text and promotional messages to the darker end of the gradient. One reason they are so popular is because they allow you to instantly place one or two of your brand colors over a stock photo!

How cool is that? I hear tons of bloggers lament about how much trouble they have finding styled stock images in their own brand colors. Turns out with a dash of creativity you can make almost any stock photo fit your brand!

And if the gradient looks a little too plain for you, you can always customize it further with your brand’s fonts, logo, extra overlays, and more.

Take A Variety of Cropped Sections For A New Spin On Your Stock Image

Probably one of the easiest ways to customize a stock photo is to make various cropped images from it. The key here is variety. You can take horizontal cropped images like the one shown below, or you can take verticals for Pinterest and squares for Instagram.

Heck you can even take super wide and short crops to use as your header images! Rotate them, flip them, or change the angle and you can easily squeeze a few dozen new blog images out of one styled photo.

Create Unique Pinterest Pins

Let’s be real for a moment. We all know that one of the keys to Pinterest success is to have stunning, bold, easy-to-read pins that make people want to save them. Any old boring pin just isn’t going to cut it these days.

The good news is that with a few edits you can create some kick ass pins that grab people’s attention fast. In the pin below, you can see that I added a two color gradient overlay in blue and orange to a vertical crop of the original photo.

Then, I added a partially faded white overlay rectangle to set the stage for my text. And finally, I added the title of the pin in two of my brand’s fonts with my logo at the bottom.

Isn’t that easy? Seriously, this edit took me under five minutes.

Make Pinterest Worthy Inspirational Graphics

Part of a blogger’s job is to inspire their readers and encourage them to come back for more great information and motivation. And if a picture is worth a thousand words, then you better get your buns working on some inspirational images, stat!

To create this image, I simply added a two toned gradient overlay to a vertical crop of the original photo, and then added a simple script font over the top of that. Voila!

 how to use stock photos

Take Square Crops to Feed the ‘Gram

Do you ever feel like Instagram is eating you out of house and home? I sure do. It takes a ridiculous amount of photos over the long term to grow a serious Instagram following and let’s be honest, not everyone has time to shoot that many photos!

One way to make the most of a styled stock photo you love is to take a variety of square crops from all over the image. You can even take it a step further and flip or rotate them once they are cropped to make even more unique images.

And if you want to create a really unique Instagram feed without spending a ton on photography, consider turning each original stock photo into nine squares that you post on nine consecutive days. You’ll get a visually appealing block effect with every three rows being unique clips of one styled stock photo.

Create Sales Graphics That Get the Click

If you have something for sale on your blog (and you should!), sooner or later you’re going to need some promotional graphics. These are images that you can use on Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and other social media accounts to let your followers know when you launch a new product or have a sale.

In the image below, I took a close up square crop from our original image and flipped it. See how the tulips are pointing from the left rather than the right?

After that I added a nice script font with a thin line below it to promote the sale. Simple and classy.

Make Some Attention Grabbing Twitter Images

If you’ve been on Twitter more than once or twice, you know that tweets with pictures are waaaaay more noticeable than text-only tweets.

The fact is that if you want to stand out on Twitter, you really need to be making images to go along with your blog post links. These not only help solidify your brand, but they also entice your followers to read the post, comment, and hopefully retweet it to their followers as well.

Thankfully, making Twitter images in Picmonkey or Canva is crazy easy. I used a white overlay, two branded fonts, a thin line, and my logo over the original image to create the Twitter image below. And even better, you can save the template to the Picmonkey Hub and come back to it again and again for future Twitter images. It really doesn’t get any easier than that!

How to Use Tailwind's SmartLoop Feature to Grow Your Pinterest

You may have heard of “looping” pins before, but it used to be that you could only do that on BoardBooster (RIP BoardBooster). When you “loop” pins, old pins get repinned so they get a chance to be seen again. And now there’s good news for Tailwind users. Tailwind’s SmartLoop feature is out, and it works great! Here’s how to use Tailwind’s SmartLoop feature to grow your Pinterest account.

For even more Pinterest goodness, make sure to sign up for my Pinterest workshop!

How to Use Tailwind's SmartLoop Feature to Grow Your Pinterest

How to Use Tailwind's SmartLoop Feature to Grow Your Pinterest! Tailwind makes it easy to loop your pins and get more Pinterest followers, more Pinterest repins, and more Pinterest clicks. These are great Pinterest tips and blog tips! Click through to read all about these awesome new Pinterest tool! #blog, #blogging, #blogger, #blogbiz, #blogtips, #pinterest, #pinteresttips, #pinterestforbusiness, #tailwind, #socialmedia, #socialmediamarketing, #socialmediatips

*This article contains affiliate links. This means that if you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission. There is no extra cost to you for this. I appreciate your support!

What is looping?

Looping means that old pins on a particular board get repinned so that they get seen again on the feed. It’s a great way to get your content seen without having to do anything at all. Once you set it up, it’s all automated.

As Tailwind says,

“Save hours and hours of manual Pinning and ditch the complicated spreadsheets. Add your Pins to SmartLoop once and we’ll re-circulate them for you – indefinitely.”

— Tailwind

BoardBooster used to offer this feature, and now Tailwind does too!

How Tailwind’s SmartLoop feature works

Here’s how SmartLoop works.

First, navigate to the SmartLoop area, which is located under the Publisher icon. You'll have the option to select either an evergreen loop (meaning that it runs all the time) or a seasonal loop (meaning that it only runs at particular times of the year).

You might want to do a seasonal loop for things like holiday boards. That way you’re not pinning Christmas decorations in July. Otherwise, an evergreen loop is probably what you want.

Next you’ll have the option to name your loop and select which board, or boards, you want the pins to post to. You can have them go all to one board, or to multiple boards.

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature to grow your pinterest

Once you’ve done that, you can add pins to your loop. Select which board you want your pins to come from, and if you want the whole board, or only pins from your own domain. Or you can even hand-select particular pins to be looped. Then add the pins to the loop, and you’re good to go! Your pins will automatically be added to your Smart Schedule.

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature to grow your pinterest

You can also set up “board rules” that tell Tailwind how often they should pin to a particular board. This is useful for group boards that have rules about how often you can post.

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature to grow your pinterest

Using SmartLoop for group boards

SmartLoop also works great for scheduling to group boards. You can set all of your group boards as the boards where the content will be pinned to, and then set your blog board as the board where the content comes from. It’s like the “Campaigns” feature from BoardBooster.

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature to grow your pinterest

How do you get SmartLoop?

If you sign up for Tailwind through this link, you'll see an option for SmartLoop on your account.

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature

The feature is currently still in Beta, so you'll have the chance to check out what it's all about, and if you want, sign up!

how to use tailwind's smartloop feature

SmartLoop is a great new feature from Tailwind. I’m using it for all my looping, and my group board pinning now. Combined with the pins that I pin from Tailwind Tribes (another great feature), this accounts for almost all of my pinning.

I highly recommend checking out SmartLoop (or all of Tailwind, if you haven’t yet).

Have you tried it yet?? Let me know in the comments!

How to Run a Viral Giveaway

If you’re looking to get more email subscribers for your blog, a giveaway is a great way to do it. I’ve had giveaways that got me over 1,000 email subscribers in one go. And hosting a viral giveaway can help you gain even more than email subscribers. You can gain Twitter followers, Instagram followers, and more. Here’s how to run a viral giveaway.

How to Run a Viral Giveaway

How to Run a Viral Giveaway! You can get more email subscribers with a viral giveaway! These are great blog tips to grow your email list! Perfect for beginner bloggers! Click to read all the blog tips! #blog, #blogger, #blogging, #blogbiz, #blogtips, #emaillist, #emailsubscribers, #giveaway

What is a viral giveaway?

When someone says a “viral giveaway,” you may think of something that goes totally viral on the Internet and reaches tens of thousands of people. But that’s not really what it means. A viral giveaway is a giveaway where subscribers are encouraged to share the link to your giveaway on social media, and therefore the giveaway reaches more and more people.

Certain giveaway platforms give subscribers a unique link and tell them that for every person that enters the giveaway through their unique link, they’ll gain extra entries and up their chances of winning. And it really works. People share it all the time.

What giveaway platform to use

There are lots of giveaway platforms out there, but the one I recommend is King Sumo. King Sumo allows you to make your giveaway viral, as explained above. It also allows you to have people follow you on various social media platforms to gain even more entries.

King Sumo also sets a giveaway page that looks really nice.

How to run a viral giveaway

What prizes to use in your giveaway

It’s important to pick the right prizes for your giveaway. You may be tempted to use something like an iPad. After all, everyone wants an iPad. But this is actually the wrong way to go about it.

If you give away something like an iPad, with universal appeal, you may gain more subscribers, but they’re not going to be the right kind of subscribers. People with zero interest in your blog will sign up. And if they have no interest in your blog, they’re not going to be quality email subscribers. They won’t be interested in what you have to say, and that won’t get you very far.

Instead of giving away something with universal appeal, make your prize something that is tailored to YOUR audience. You’ll get fewer subscribers, but they’ll be higher quality. If it’s something that only appeals to someone interested in your blog topic, then they’ll be much higher quality subscribers for you.

Run a giveaway with the RIGHT prize for YOUR audience.Click To Tweet

When I run a giveaway, I use prizes that only appeal to bloggers. I have a blog about blogging, so I want people on my email list that are going to be interested in blog and social media tips. My prizes are always about blogging.

So there you have it. Run a viral giveaway and give a serious boost to your email list.

Voila!

You can also set up “board rules” that tell Tailwind how often they should pin to a particular board. This is useful for group boards that have rules about how often you can post.

Using SmartLoop for group boards

SmartLoop also works great for scheduling to group boards. You can set all of your group boards as the boards where the content will be pinned to, and then set your blog board as the board where the content comes from. It’s like the “Campaigns” feature from BoardBooster.

If you sign up for Tailwind through this link, you'll see an option for SmartLoop on your account.

The feature is currently still in Beta, so you'll have the chance to check out what it's all about, and if you want, sign up!

When I run a giveaway, I use prizes that only appeal to bloggers. I have a blog about blogging, so I want people on my email list that are going to be interested in blog and social media tips. My prizes are always about blogging.

So there you have it. Run a viral giveaway and give a serious boost to your email list.
